Basic Info

Thorunn Sveinbjörnsdóttir

Thorunn Sveinbjörnsdóttir is one of the founder members of a mentoring project which started in Iceland last year. The project is the result of collaboration between the Icelandic Red Cross and the “Women of Many Nations” organisation, and its key aims are to build up a network for women with non-Icelandic backgrounds and to help them find opportunities in the job market.

Mentoring is considered an essential strategy in helping the women become accustomed to Icelandic society and thus in breaching social isolation. The programme is based on the idea that Icelandic society has much to offer, but that it can be difficult for immigrant women to make use of the many resources available if they do not know where to find the necessary information.

Thorunn worked for many years with Efling Trade Union, one of the largest unions in Iceland with 16,000 members and covering all areas of unskilled labour in Reykjavik and its suburbs; she retired in 2007.

She is currently writing a book on the history of women’s education in the unskilled labour market in Iceland.
